Western Massachusetts Visual Arts and Poetry Biennial

Unthemed Call for Artwork and Poems

Deadline: August 1, 2021

(Open to Hampden, Hampshire, Berkshire and Franklin Counties)

The Northampton Arts Council enthusiastically invites submissions for their 2021 Visual Arts and Poetry Biennial, to be held at Forbes Library’s Hosmer Gallery from October 2nd through October 29th, 2021. The Northampton Arts Council Biennial is a juried art exhibit and poetry event with free entry, open to artists and poets from Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties. Artists and writers are asked to submit for an Unthemed Call for Artwork and Poems. Artists and writers are asked to submit their best work that was created within the timeframe of January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, and most closely represents the artist’s or poet’s personal artistic vision.

All two and three-dimensional art in any style, as well as video and performance art will be considered for the visual arts component. The Arts Council also encourages submissions of large 3-dimensional, weather tolerant art for the outdoor exhibition space on the Forbes Library lawn. Artists may submit up to three pieces.

Poets may submit up to 3 poems; previously published poems or unpublished work written during this period may be submitted. Accepted poems will be displayed in a poetry chapbook in the Hosmer Gallery throughout the month of October.

In tandem with our Hosmer Gallery exhibition, the Northampton Arts Council will launch a virtual gallery of accepted artwork and poetry.

The submission deadline for visual arts and poetry is August 1, 2021 at 11:59PM.

Jurors:

The Arts Council is proud to announce a well-rounded panel of professionals in the field who represent various aspects of the art community in western Massachusetts. The 2021 Biennial jurors for visual art will be Dean Brown of Pulp Gallery, Holyoke; Alvilda Sophia Anaya-Alegria, Economics professor, Painter, Art curator and representative of the Institute of Puerto Rican art in museum installations and Public Art Artist; and Jessica Tam, artist and assistant professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Poetry jurors include Susan Kan, founder of Perugia Press; Enzo Silon Surin, Haitian-born poet, educator, speaker, publisher and social advocate; and Karen Skolfield, winner of the 2020 Massachusetts Book Award in poetry and Poet Laureate of Northampton.

By hosting the Biennial, the Northampton Arts Council hopes to nurture connections between artists, writers, and art lovers as well as contribute to a vital, sustaining, and inclusive art community in Western Massachusetts.
